If I were a writer of fiction, this photo would be on the cover of my novel. I am not sure to what genre the story would belong, but the image is definitely a mystery, one that has been haunting me ever since I captured it with my camera.  

I was walking around Karlovasi, in the Greek island of Samos, where I recently spent a week (postcard from Samos), when my eyes encountered the enigmatic placement of a piece of kitchen furniture outside an obviously abandoned house.

The left door of the cupboard is wide open to show how bereft of content it is. What used to be stored inside it? Staples, maybe, like pasta and canned vegetables, or pots and pans, like in the cupboard next to my stove.

The drawers are protectively closed, though I can't imagine they contain anything. Yet, maybe a set of cutlery is still inside them, not the elegant one, reserved for celebrations, but the everyday set, which shows signs of years of daily use.

A piece of rope appears to want to secure the cupboard to a door, but that's futile, as the drawer can be pulled out and the one-eyed cupboard removed from its current place.

Unless the setup is meant to tempt the passerby to pull out the tied drawer, which will unleash a spell…

Maybe I should write this story: it will be titled The Adventures of the Captive Cupboard.
